Edwin Josue Castellanos

Vice-Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala

Dr. Edwin Castellanos is a leading environmental scientist with over 35 years of experience in natural resource management and global environmental change, including climate change, deforestation, water, and biodiversity. He holds a PhD in Environmental Science from Indiana University, an MSc in Analytical Chemistry from Michigan State University, and a Chemistry degree from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG).
A globally recognized climate change expert, he was a Lead Author of the IPCC’s Fifth and Sixth Assessment Reports and has served in key leadership roles, including Scientific Director of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and Latin America Scientific Director for The Nature Conservancy.
Dr. Castellanos has received multiple awards, including Guatemala’s National Science and Technology Medal (2016) and Gold Medal from Guatemala’s Professional Associations (2020). He is a member of Guatemala’s Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences and has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific publications.
