Sarah Fletcher

Postdoctoral Associate, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Dr. Sarah Fletcher is a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Her research takes an interdisciplinary approach to planning under uncertainty in water and food systems, integrating hydrological and climate modeling with data science and policy analysis. In particular, her work investigates the potential for Bayesian learning to enable flexible infrastructure design and adaptive policymaking. She is currently using remote sensing analysis to assess the vulnerability of food systems in sub-Saharan Africa and guide climate change adaptation. Her work has been recognized through paper awards from the American Geophysical Union, fellowships including the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and a best thesis award from MIT. Previously, Sarah worked as an industry researcher and consultant on issues at the intersection of water, energy, and environment at IHS CERA. She was the Director of Product Development at the technology startup Sourcewater, where she led the development of the first online marketplace for water and wastewater for energy companies. Sarah has a PhD in Engineering Systems from MIT, an SM in Technology and Policy from MIT, and a BA in Physics and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. In her free time, she enjoys rock climbing, playing the violin, and reading novels.
