Former tenured faculty, University of California, San Francisco. 1998, joined the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion; 2002-09, CDC Director; led more than 40 emergency responses to public health crises, including anthrax bioterrorism, SARS and natural disasters. 2010, joined Merck as President, Merck Vaccines; led efforts to make the company’s vaccines more available and affordable to people in resource-limited countries. Currently, Executive Vice-President and Chief Patient Officer, Strategic Communications, Global Public Policy, and Population Health, Merck & Co.; also responsible for “Merck for Mothers” global programme to prevent maternal mortality and the Merck Foundation. Has advised governments on issues such as pandemic preparedness, AIDS, antimicrobial resistance, tobacco, and cancer. Member of the Board: Cerner Corporation, CWRU, MSD Wellcome Trust Hilleman Laboratories, and the BIO Executive Committee. Recipient of more than 50 awards and honours, including the US Department of Health and Human Services Distinguished Service Award for leadership in responses to anthrax bioterrorism and the September 11, 2001 attacks. Named Forbes Magazine's 100 Most Powerful Women in the World (2005 – 2008); TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World (2004); Healthcare Business Women's Association 2018 Woman of the Year.
