Javier is an inventor and social entrepreneur, working at the intersection of technology and humane design. His present focus is on developing frameworks tackling design fragility inherent to frontier technologies as an IDM Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is also an advisor and board member for several start-ups and non-profits, including Bowhead Health, Ceylon Skincare, Presence, and eyeWitness.

His journey began at age 15, when he started Geeksphone, the first European smartphone-maker to bring Android to market in 2009. Blackphone, a later joint-venture, was recognized as Top Invention of the Year by TIME Magazine for pioneering privacy and security in consumer phones. After its acquisition by Silent Circle in 2015, he remained as the firm’s Chief Scientist until 2016. He then went on to serve as VP of Strategic Alliances at Snips.ai until its acquisition by Sonos in late 2019.

He has co-founded 3 additional companies in IoT cybersecurity (Barbara IoT), media distribution (Neupic), and embedded devices (TabSolutions), and is an advisor on privacy and technology to various civil society leaders, and formerly to EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes.

Javier was a founding cohort member of the Global Shapers Madrid Hub, and vice-curator in Madrid and San Francisco. He is currently part of the New York City Hub.
