1972, graduate in Architecture and Sculpture, Rhode Island School of Design. 1978, formed James Carpenter Design Associates studio, to work with architects and engineers on glass structures; taught at Harvard University, MIT and University of Stuttgart. Recipient of numerous awards including: National Environment Design Award, Smithsonian Institution (2002); MacArthur Fellowship (2004).
