George Benson

Senior Manager, Economic Development and Market Transformation, Zero Emissions Innovation Centre

George Patrick Richard Benson an urban planner and writer in Vancouver, Canada, where he works on strategic initiatives related to clean energy, transportation, social impact finance, and telecommunications.

He currently works as the Senior Manager of Economic Development and Market Transformation at the Zero Emissions Innovation Centre. ZEIC is a charitable capacity building organization with a $21.7 million endowment working to help businesses, governments, and citizens reach local and national climate goals by 2050. Within ZEIC, George supports issues related to regional workforce development planning and the energy transition; sustainable finance policy and capacity building with the Government of British Columbia, and various forms of economic research related to capturing the full benefits of the clean economy.

Additionally, George is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of the Climate Climate Displacement Planning Initiaitive (CDPI), a Vancouver-based nonprofit looking to build solutions and networks that can help address climate change displacement to and within cities. He is also involved in a wide variety of other work in Canada and around the world to advance climate action, economic transformation, and more just and inclusive cities.

George has worked in Canada and abroad, spending time in Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. He has served as a Canadian national delegate and a civil society representative at United Nations events, such as HABITAT III and the UN High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development. He has sat on the Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC)'s Climate Action Task Force, is involved in trans-boundary collaboration between sub-national governments in Canada and the US, and in 2018 was honoured with the City of Vancouver's Award of Excellence for his service to the community in building resilience and sustainability.
