Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is the UK’s largest pension scheme by assets, with £64 billion under management (31 March 2018), providing retirement benefits to 420,000 members at 350 institutions in the higher education sector. USS was established in 1974, a corporate trustee responsible for administering both defined (DB) and other benefits and defined contributions (DC) pensions, supported by c.200 London-based and c.270-Liverpool based staff. Its in-house investment team, USS Investment Management, was established in 2012, managing over 75% of USS assets, including £16 billion in private market investments, such as £3.6 billion in property and £700 million in green technologies.
