National Science Foundation (NSF)

National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency of the United States established in 1950 to promote the progress of science, advance national welfare and security, and support education in science and engineering. Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, it funds basic research and STEM education across all non-medical disciplines through competitive grants and cooperative agreements. The NSF supports universities, researchers and institutions nationwide, accounting for roughly a quarter of federally funded basic research in U.S. academia. Its activities are guided by the National Science Board and organised through thematic directorates and offices.
