A passionate jazz fan and a visionary, Claude Nobs created the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967 when he was working for the tourist office. Since 1967, the Montreux Jazz Festival surprises with a unique and diversified programme. Major artists who have performed in Montreux include: Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Prince and, of course, Deep Purple, who set a musical monument for the festival - their hit "Smoke On The Water".
