Achieving Net-Zero

The 2018 “ IPCC 1.5 report” advised that we need to keep global average temperature rise <1.5 degrees to prevent catastrophic climate change. In practice, in line with the understanding of available carbon budgets, this is widely understood to mean reducing global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions to ‘net zero’ by 2050. Seven sectors of heavy industry are jointly responsible for 30% of global GHG emissions. To prevent this percentage from increasing rapidly, they must decarbonize through well-targeted policy, scaling and cost reductions.
