Young people are becoming unhappier, a new report finds

Young people’s fears for the future are growing, says a new report, fuelled by rising costs and falling job security. Climate change and political discord also weigh heavily.
Young people around the world are reporting lower levels of happiness, according to the World Happiness Report. This trend is particularly concerning as young people have typically been happier than older generations.
The widening happiness gap
Experts point to a number of factors contributing to this shift, including the impact of the pandemic and growing pessimism about the future. Social media use is also seen as a factor, potentially leading to increased depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
How can countries help?
The report suggests several ways countries can address this downward trend:
- Provide accessible mental health services for young people, both at school and in the workplace.
- Foster connections across cultures through mentorship programs, exchange programs, etc.
- Advocate for social media reforms that create a safe and positive environment for young people.
- Equip young people with the life skills they need to thrive, including financial literacy and online safety skills.
The World Economic Forum's Healthy Workforces initiative is working to identify the implications of declining youth mental health and promote strategies to improve it.
