This Hawaiian island is building on stilts to prepare for rising seas

A new law requires all new buildings to be elevated to avoid the threat of floods. Kauaʻi is facing a 1-metre rise in sea levels by 2100. Basement floors must now stand 0.6 metres higher than that. Every new building in a flood-prone area will have to comply. As well as any old structure facing a major rebuild. The rules also apply to Niʻihau, Lehua and Kaʻula, 3 nearby islands.
