Today, mangrove forests are one of the world’s best-protected ecosystems. 42% of the world’s mangroves are now in protected areas. They are a vital store of ‘blue’ carbon. That is, CO2 sequestered in ocean and coastal ecosystems. The world’s mangrove forests contain the equivalent of almost 23 gigatons of CO2, that's half the total emitted each year by fossil fuels, industry, and deforestation.
