They are trialling a new method for coral reef restoration that uses a ‘cryomesh’. A device that sieves the coral larvae from the water and stores it in place so it can be frozen. Freezing corals to repopulate damaged reefs is not a new idea. But until now, doing so has required sophisticated and expensive kits. The cryomech was developed at the University of Minnesota and can be 3D printed cheaply, and it does a better job of preserving the larvae than existing methods. Here’s more about this coral reef restoration technique.
