Arts and Humanities Are on the Rise at Some US Universities
Berkeley’s literature, philosophy, music, and media departments are seeing their most applicants for arts and humanities courses in a decade, while 43% more high-schoolers are applying to major in arts than 5 years ago. The University of Arizona has seen a 33% rise in humanities majors since 2016. More than double the number of first-year students declared arts and humanities majors at the University of California, Berkeley, last year. A UK report found that arts and humanities graduates were just as likely to be employed with their salaries after 5 years landing in the middle of the range. Meanwhile, humanities skills such as communication, collaboration, independence, and creativity are increasingly sought-after, even in unrelated fields such as tech.
