W. E. Moerner is the Harry S. Mosher Professor of Chemistry and Professor, by courtesy, of Applied Physics at Stanford University. A Nobel Prize–winning physical chemist and chemical physicist, his research focuses on single-molecule spectroscopy, super-resolution microscopy and biophysics. He received the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy and is recognized for pioneering the optical detection and spectroscopy of individual molecules. His current research uses advanced 2D and 3D imaging and single-molecule tracking to study proteins, DNA and RNA in living cells, including cellular organization, viral infection and molecular interactions.
