Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil is the Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings, a leading
healthcare services provider in the GCC which employs more than 10,000 professionals
and serves more than 4.3m patients annually. Through his family oice, VPS
Healthcare, Dr. Shamsheer oversees an extensive investment portfolio which
includes Burjeel Holdings, Response Plus Holding (RPM), LifePharma, Lakeshore
Hospital, Ziva, Keita, and Educare Institute. He is also the chairman of Amanat
Holdings, a leading healthcare and education-listed investment company.
In an entrepreneurial career spanning over 17 years, Dr. Shamsheer has successfully
steered two of the companies he founded – Response Plus Holding PJSC and
Bur- jeel Holdings – into public markets in Abu Dhabi. He has built and grown companies
by identifying market gaps and expanding its healthcare services to cater to
them. Today, portfolio companies dominate healthcare, with diverse
and connected networks comprising hospitals, medical centers, pharmacies, and
other allied services.
Since establishing his first hospital in Abu Dhabi in 2007, Dr. Shamsheer has accelerated
the group’s transformation into the UAE’s largest and leading private
healthcare services provider, elevating the level of care available across the spectrum.
They deliver world-leading care through its Burjeel Hospitals, Medeor Hospitals,
LLH Hospitals, Lifecare Hospitals, and Tajmeel brands. Dr. Shamsheer has
established a strong record of driving commercial excellence while championing a
commitment to accessible healthcare solutions.

Dr. Shamsheer continues to use bold vision and innovation to address the wider
healthcare and skills gap challenges. Under his guidance, Burjeel Holdings’
plans to scale up operations in new geographies in the GCC and beyond. In
August 2022, the group signed a Memorandum of Understanding with KSA’s
Ministry of Investment, which will see it seek opportunities to invest up to USD
$1 billion in the Kingdom by 2030. In addition, it’s servicing the increasing
demand for super specialty and complex care in the region, investing in technology
, and recruiting the world’s leading clinicians in areas including oncology,
cardiovascular conditions, and paediatrics.
Philanthropic and Education Endeavors
Dr. Shamsheer is immensely appreciative of the UAE, a country that has nourished
and enabled his creativity and success. Earlier this year, he facilitated
Burjeel Holdings’ support for a unique climate challenge at the Saïd Business
School is the University of Oxford, which will provide a global platform for the
billion-strong high school students and teachers to help address the issues
posed by the changing climate. With a commitment to giving back and nurturing
the future leaders of the UAE, Burjeel Holdings partnered with Abu Dhabi's
Al Bayt Mitwahid Association for a campaign called Future Medical Stars,
which is designed to increase the number of Emiratis working in healthcare by
10,000. He also established a ‘Million Dirham’ fund to set up business incubators
for Emirati high school students with aspirational healthcare business
ideas. In 2019, an additional program was launched to help Emirati nurses
develop careers in clinical research and further their education abroad.
Dr. Shamsheer has dedicated his career to improving lives, first as a physician
and then as the leader of a diverse and dynamic healthcare group. He has
ensured that community engagement is built into the very essence of the companies.
Over the years, the institutions have collaborated with various government
authorities, public and the private sector and other stakeholders to tackle
humanitarian emergencies.
Dr. Shamsheer has received numerous global and local accolades for his continuous
pursuit of excellence in developing healthcare and entrepreneurship.
He is the recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, India’s highest
civilian award presented to Non-Resident Indians, and the proud recipient of
the 2015 GPF Global Humanitarian Award. He was among the first investors
to receive long-term residency in the UAE and Oman. In addition to his
corporate responsibilities, he remains committed to building capability and
capacity in the UAE and serves as a member of the UAE Medical Council and
of the advisory committee of the University of Sharjah College of Medicine.
He completed his medical training at Kasturba Medical College, India, after
which he received additional specialty training in radiology. Originally from
Kozhikode, India, Dr. Shamsheer is a committed philanthropist who strives to
make a deep impact on public health globally and inspire other young entrepreneurs
to follow suit.
