Nobuyuki Hirano

Mr. Hirano is the Chairman of MUFG and the director of MUFG Bank, Ltd. A veteran banker, Mr. Hirano started his career more than 40 years ago working at MUFG’s domestic banking branch offices. He later developed his career in Europe and New York, where he held a variety of positions within corporate banking and global strategy planning. Following his return to Japan, he held a number of high-ranking positions in the Bank’s corporate banking and corporate planning divisions. In January 2006, Mr. Hirano was appointed as a Managing Director of the Bank responsible for corporate functions. In March 2009, he became a director of Morgan Stanley, a firm with which MUFG maintains a strategic capital alliance. In June 2009, Mr. Hirano was promoted to Deputy President of MUFG Bank and also assumed an additional role as a Managing Officer of MUFG in charge of facilitating the strategic alliance with Morgan Stanley.
In April 2012, Mr. Hirano was appointed President of the Bank, and a year later, in April 2013, began concurrently serving as President & Group CEO of MUFG. He became the Chairman of the bank in April 2016. In April 2019, he was appointed the Chairman of MUFG. Mr. Hirano has served as a Chairman of the Japan-U.S. Business Council since 2017, an Audit and Supervisory Board member of Toyota Motor Corporation since 2018, a Director, Audit and Supervisory Committee Member of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and a Vice Chair of Keidanren (Japan Business Federation) since 2019. Mr. Hirano graduated in 1974 from Kyoto University, where he studied law.
