Professor Heejung Chung is Professor of Work and Employment in the Department of Human Resource Management & Employment Relations at King’s Business School, King’s College London, and serves as Director of the King’s Global Institute for Women’s Leadership. A leading scholar in labour market and welfare-state research, her work centres on flexible working, remote/hybrid models, and their impact on gender equality, work-family balance, and employee well being. She authored The Flexibility Paradox: why flexible working leads to (self ) exploitation (Policy Press), a prestigious volume that explores why innovative work arrangements often intensify rather than alleviate work life conflict—making her insights essential for HR leaders designing people centric policies. Her research has secured over £10 million in grant funding, including support from the ESRC, European Research Council, Nuffield Foundation, and NORFACE. She has worked with both national (UK, Korea, Germany, Italy, Estonia etc.) and international (European Commission, OECD, ILO, UN etc.) government agencies around the world shaping better HR frameworks. Her findings have informed major policy reforms such as the EU’s Work Life Balance Directive and the emerging "Right to Disconnect." A respected media commentator, Heejung addresses workplace evolution—from return to office mandates, burnout risks, and around a wide range of issues on gender and racial inequalities - across top outlets like The New York Times, The Guardian, Washington Post, BBC Radio 4, Forbes, and CNN etc. She regularly participates in HR focused webinars and podcasts. Driven by a dual commitment to rigorous research and real world impact, Professor Chung advises national governments and employers on designing equitable, flexible working cultures. Under her leadership, the Institute for Women’s Leadership continues to advance HR best practice through evidence based insights and collaborative initiatives.
