1999, founded Panzi Hospital in response to the devastating war that surrounded the community in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The hospital now serves a population of 400,000 as the general referral hospital for the Ibanda Health Zone in the DRC, with a full range of health services. As a direct result of the war, maternal mortality was on the rise. The safety of all women and girls has been affected by brutal forces that have devastated their bodies in unimaginable ways. First patient was a rape survivor whose reproductive organs had been brutally destroyed. While violence against women and girls intensified dramatically in the context of Congo wars, has devoted significant resources to treating women with fistula and other complex gynaecological injuries - traumatic and obstetric. To support the holistic model of care at Panzi Hospital, has formed two foundations: Panzi Foundation DRC and Panzi Foundation USA; they work in lock-step with the hospital to fund and implement vital programmes serving survivors of sexual violence and the wider community surrounding Panzi.
