Pedro Antonio Arraes Pereira

President, EMATER-GO (Agency for Technical Assistance and Agriculture Research of the State of Goiás)

Pedro Antonio Arraes Pereira, 63 natural of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is an agronomist from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ), with MSc and PhD degrees on Improvement and Genetics of Plants from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. His post-doctorate on Molecular Genetics and Molecular Markers of Common Beans has been concluded in 1996 at the University of California, Davis. He has started his career as a researcher in 1977, still as an intern at Embrapa and while attending his second year of Agronomy, under the tutorship of Johanna Dobereiner (deceased), with whom he worked actively on the discovery of the association between free life bacteria and the root system of grasses for the biological fixation of nitrogen. When he graduated, he entered Embrapa in January 1980. He helped Embrapa Rice and Beans (Goiânia-GO) to establish the philosophy of integrated genetic improvement of beans, with the use of native and cultivated genoty pes, contributing to the launching of varieties of expressive repercussion in the market for beans. He also helped in establishing the structure of the molecular markers laboratory, essential for the whole work on biotechnology. Pedro Arraes has coordinated several research projects, provided orientation to theses, and participated in more than 80 national and international scientific meetings. and He published 50 scientific papers, among which 10 with relevant international scope. He accumulated significant international experience, having participated in different Official Missions of the Brazilian Government to China and Egypt, in international for a organized by FAO, the World Bank, the Inter- American Development Bank (IDB), and in evaluation panels of international centers and selection of members to the CGIAR (Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research). As an administrator, he has been the coordinator of Embrapa’s Labex in U SA, the first Virtual Laboratory of Embrapa abroad, from 2004 to 2007, and member of the Agribusiness Sectoral Fund as representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply, from 2001 to 2003. At Embrapa Rice and Beans, he has been the General Director from 1997 to 2004, and 2008 to 2009 and Research Director from 1989 to 1995. He served as President of Embrapa from 2009 to 1012. As president he implemented the process of Internationalization of Embrapa leading several programs of south and south collaboration. One of main example is the program named as Agricultural Market Place. From 2012 to 2014 served as advisor of the Secretary of Strategic Affairs linked to Brazilian presidency. In the moment is the president of Emater Goias which is the Goias State Agency for Research and Extension Service.
